Bangladesh fire kills 112 workers making clothes for U.S. brands

The 100-plus workers who died in a fire late Saturday at a high-rise garment factory in Bangladesh were working overtime making clothes for major American retailers, including Wal-Mart, according to workers' rights groups.

Officials in Bangladesh said the flames at the Tazreen Fashions factory outside Dhaka spread rapidly on the ground floor, trapping those on the higher floors of the nine-story building. There were no exterior fire escapes, according to officials, and many died after jumping from upper floors to escape the flames.

As firemen continued to remove bodies Sunday, officials said at least 112 people had died but that the number of fatalities could go higher.

The Tazreen fire is the latest in a series of deadly blazes at garment factories in Bangladesh, where more than 700 workers, many making clothes for U.S. consumers, have died in factory fires in the past five years. As previously reported by ABC News, Bangladesh has some of the cheapest labor in the world and some of the most deplorable working conditions.

READ the original ABC News report.

"The industry and parent brands in the U.S. have been warned again and again about the extreme danger to workers in Bangladesh and they have not taken action," said Scott Nova, executive director of the Worker Rights Consortium, an American group working to improve conditions at factories abroad that make clothes for U.S. companies. Nova said the fire was the most deadly in the history of the Bangladesh apparel industry, and "one of the worst in any country."

WATCH the 'Nightline' report on deadly factories.

Workers' activists went into the burned-out remains today to document which major retailers were using the Tazreen factory.

They say they found labels for Faded Glory, a Wal-Mart private label, along with labels they said traced back to Sears and a clothing company owned by music impresario Sean "Diddy" Combs.

"There's no question that Wal-Mart and the other customers at this factory bear some blame for what happened in this factory," Nova said.

Nova also said that Wal-Mart "knew exactly what's going on at these facilities. They have staff on site in Bangladesh."

Wal-Mart actually warned of dangerous conditions at the Tazreen factory last year, in a letter posted online by the factory owner.

Wal-Mart told ABC News that the company has not yet been able to confirm that it was still making clothes at the factory.

In a statement, Wal-Mart told ABC News, "Our thoughts are with the families of the victims of this tragedy. ... [F]ire safety is a critically important area of Wal-Mart's factory audit program and we have been working across the apparel industry to improve fire safety education and training in Bangladesh.

"As part of this effort, we partnered with several independent organizations to develop and roll out fire safety training tools for factory management and workers. Continued engagement is critical to ensure that reliable, proactive measures are in place to reduce the chance of factory fires. "

Spokespeople for Combs and Sears did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Pentagon releases Benghazi timeline, defends response

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Pentagon leaders knew of the September 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi an hour after it began, but were unable to mobilize reinforcements based in Europe in time to prevent the death of the U.S. ambassador, according to a timeline released on Friday.

Senior defense officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, rejected criticism accusing the Pentagon of failing to move quickly to send reinforcements to relieve the consulate or using armed aerial drones to fire on the attackers.

"The Department of Defense acted quickly after learning of the incidents unfolding in Benghazi," said one official, adding that Marines, special forces and other military assets had either been employed or put in motion during the attack.

"Unfortunately, no alternative or additional aircraft options were available within a timeline to be effective," the official added.

The Obama administration's response to the attack became a highly charged political issue in the last weeks of the presidential campaign. The CIA, which had a base near the consulate, and the State Department have released timelines on the incident.

According to the Pentagon's timeline, the military's Africa Command, based in Europe, ordered an unmanned, unarmed surveillance drone diverted to the city in eastern Libya just 17 minutes after the attack on the consulate began about 9:42 p.m. local time (3:42 p.m. EDT), the first military action in response to the incident. It took the drone more than an hour to arrive at the scene.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta's office was notified of the attack 50 minutes after it began, and Panetta learned of it shortly thereafter as he and the military's top general headed to a previously scheduled meeting with President Barack Obama at the White House.

Obama, Panetta and Army General Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, discussed potential responses to the unfolding events in Benghazi during their meeting, which began 78 minutes after the start of the Libya attack, according to the timeline.

PENTAGON MEETINGS

Panetta and Dempsey then returned to the Pentagon and began a two-hour series of meetings with General Carter Ham, head of Africa Command, and other senior military leaders from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. EDT (12 a.m. to 2 a.m. Libya time) to organize responses to the attack.

But as they arrived at the Pentagon, the surviving personnel from the consulate in Benghazi were being evacuated by a CIA team that arrived from a nearby base, about two hours after the start of the attack. Ambassador Christopher Stevens was missing.

Stevens' body was found at a local hospital. He apparently died of asphyxiation in the smoke-filled diplomatic compound after it was set ablaze by the attackers. Stevens and three other U.S. personnel died in the attack on the consulate and a nearby CIA annex.

"When initial reports came in, we knew the ambassador could not be reached," a senior defense official told reporters. "We were looking at the possibility of a potential hostage-rescue scenario, for instance. So we didn't know if this was going to be an hours-long event or a days-long even or longer."

During the meetings, the group formulated a response to the attack and gave verbal orders to prepare to deploy two teams of Marine anti-terrorism troops, used for providing security, and two special forces units, one based in Europe and the other in the United States.

One Marine Corps Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team, or FAST team, was designated for the U.S. Embassy in Tripoli and the other for the consulate in Benghazi. The special forces units were ordered to prepare to go to a staging base in Europe.

As the Pentagon meetings got under way, a six-man security team from the embassy in Tripoli, which included two Defense Department personnel, left for Benghazi, landing at the airport at 1:30 a.m Libya time (7:30 p.m. EDT).

A CIA timeline released last week said that team was held up at the airport trying to organize transportation and locate the missing U.S. ambassador.

The team from Tripoli got to the CIA base in Benghazi, at about 5:15 a.m. Libya time (11:15 p.m. EDT), arriving at the start of a mortar attack by militants that killed two U.S. security officers.

An hour after that, a Libyan military unit arrived at the CIA base and helped evacuate all U.S. personnel and the bodies of Stevens and the other slain Americans.

4-year-old son of Raiders assistant dies

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:58 p.m. ET Nov. 10, 2012

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - The 4-year-old son of Oakland Raiders defensive line coach Terrell Williams has died.

The team said Saturday that Tyson Williams died Friday at Oakland Children's Hospital, days after celebrating his birthday. The boy became unexpectedly ill this month, but the team did not elaborate on his illness.

The family says Tyson loved cartoons and was a caring older brother to 8-month-old Tahj.

Coach Dennis Allen says the team was shocked by the news and the organization sends its deepest sympathies to the family. Allen says Williams will have as much time off as he needs, and the defensive staff will share his responsibilities.

The Raiders play at Baltimore on Sunday.

Design Blogs And Photography - Business Insider

The young, social-media crowd wants to take in design and decorating inspiration almost exclusively in one way: through photos.

As magazines once saw readers head to the internet, now design bloggers are losing their audiences to Pinterest, Tumblr, and Instagram, sites made for photo-sharing.

But some design bloggers have figured out a way to rise above the fray and attract traffic because of their clear focus, beautiful photography, and DIY posts.

"Readers don't want to communicate online the same way anymore," said Grace Bonney, the founder of Design Sponge. "We try to engage readers on Pinterest, and a select few still want to have a longer conversation about design. But it's mainly about great photos."

"Design Sponge is dedicated to fresh, handmade design and inspiration, and making your home look more like your personality," she said.

The blog, which has been around since 2004, has around 80,000 hits and day and focuses on home tours, DIY projects, recipes, and makeovers. Bonney, who is based in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, said she gets a lot of her inspiration from Greenpoint markets, and more recently, student designers.

Ashlina Kaposta, better known as The Decorista, posts multiple photos in one post of cool visuals she sees each day or the best-of-the-best interior design she wants to share with her readers.

"I am definitely a nerd and read every marketing and branding book out there. At that time I was laid off so I just devoured videos online on how to brand yourself," she said. "If you are producing consistent content that is focused and has a vision, that will help you stick out."

Kaposta was later recruited by an Los Angeles interior design firm. But when she came to New York on a business trip to help decorate Courtney Love's new apartment, she decided not to leave. She now runs her blog and an e-decorating business.

After reviewing analytics, Kaposta saw that readers weer spending more time on her Pinterest board, which was taking away from time spent on her blog. But she considers it all part of her brand. The Decorista has about 11,000 unique visitors a day.

"What sets my blog apart is I don't use a lot of words," said Kaposta, who is based in Manhattan. "I use images and it's very visually friendly. I think there's something to that; people used to read a lot more, but now are inspired by photos."

Iran issues warning after targeting U.S. drone

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran said it would deal decisively with any foreign encroachment into its airspace, an apparent warning to the United States after one of its surveillance drones was targeted by Iranian warplanes last week.

On Thursday U.S. officials said the unarmed Predator drone was in international airspace when Iranian warplanes opened fire on it on November 1. The aircraft was not hit.

The intercept was the first time Tehran had fired at an unmanned U.S. aircraft in their 33 year stand-off.

"The defenders of the Islamic Republic will respond decisively to any form of encroachment by air, sea or on the ground," Fars news agency quoted General Massoud Jazayeri, a senior armed forces commander, as saying on Friday.

"If any foreign aircraft attempts to enter our airspace our armed forces will deal with them," he said. Jazayeri did not mention the drone incident specifically.

According to the Pentagon, two Soviet-designed SU-25 aircraft intercepted the Predator drone over Gulf waters about 16 nautical miles off the Iranian coast. After firing at the drone they followed it for several miles as it moved farther away from Iranian airspace.

Washington has issued a formal protest to the Iranian authorities via diplomatic channels.

Details of the incident emerged ahead of large-scale air defense drills due to start across several provinces in eastern Iran this week.

The "Velayat 4" maneuvers will be jointly held by the regular armed forces and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and will involve testing new radar and surveillance equipment, military commanders say.

Flight Review: Korean Air A380 Prestige Business Class LAX-ICN ...

As you know, I?m headed to Seoul this week and I?ve recently become adept at redeeming Korean SkyPass miles, so I got TPG editor Eric a one-way ticket on Korean?s A380 in their most up-to-date lie-flat Prestige business class to join me for 62,500 miles, which I transferred from Chase Ultimate Rewards. Here?s his review of the flight.

Although it initially looked like I would have to fly on Korean Air?s Flight 2 aboard an A330 that stopped in Tokyo Narita on the way to Seoul, when I called the airline to check award availability, it turned out there were seats aboard the airline?s nonstop A380 flight, so I chose that instead not only because of the convenience factor, but also because the aircraft features the airline?s latest business class product, the Prestige Sleeper seat.

My award ticket required 62,500 miles + $170.10 one-way, or would have cost $3,200 ? getting me a value of over 5 cents per mile/Chase Ultimate Reward point.

Tom Bradley International Terminal is a bit of a mess at the moment (hopefully that will be fixed once they complete the upgrades), so getting to the Korean Air check-in was a bit of a production, but at least there was no line in the SkyPriority queue and I was checked in within a minute flat and given a pass to the Korean Air lounge.

The Lounge
The Korean Air lounge is on level 4 of Tom Bradley International Terminal, and to access it, you?ve got to pass through security and then take the single elevator that shuttles guests from the ground floor up to the SkyTeam, and Star Alliance lounges It can get a bit crowded since folks from the various SkyTeam airlines have access as well and there?s just a single lift.

The food and bar offerings in the Korean Air lounge.

Once there, guests are directed either to the small first class lounge or to the busier Prestige (business class) lounge. The lounge itself isn?t very big, with just one snack area up front. There are plates of fresh fruit and veggies, some finger sandwiches and snacks like pretzels. This area also had a big coffee machine, a refrigerator with soft drinks and beer, and a self-serve bar with some California wines and mid-level liquors like Absolut and Beefeater available.

A shot of the main lounge area.

The lounge was mainly just one big seating area with blue and beige armchairs separated by little wooden side tables with lamps, and a few flatscreens on the wall tuned to news and sports. There was also a small conference room where people were working around the table on computer. There weren?t a ton of outlets, so I chose a spot along one of the walls to plug my gadgets in and charge up for the flight.

The bathrooms were nice and bright, and there were some shower suites for passengers who wanted to refresh before their flight or while in transit.

Boarding
Maybe it was because I took my time walking from the lounge to the gate (which was actually the entire length of one of the wings of the terminal, so it took a while), but by the time I boarded, everything was moving quickly along. Passengers in economy were in a neat, orderly line, and those with first or business class tickets were directed toward the SkyPriority line along one side of the gate area ? it was handy that a few gate agents were waving a placard that said SkyPriority and were hustling people through.

I boarded directly upstairs to the plane?s all-business-class top deck and walked to the middle cabin (there are smaller front and aft cabins) and was shown my seat.

A shot of the main business cabin.

The Seat
The cabin looks pretty much exactly as it does on television and the airline?s website, with 94 seats arranged in a 2 x 2 x 2 configuration with Korean Air?s signature teal fabric. I was in the middle row for direct aisle access since I was traveling alone and didn?t want to have to climb over anyone. In terms of dimensions each seat has 78 inches in pitch and is 21.6 inches wide.

The seats each had universal adapter plugs for electronics as well as 2 USB ports, the usual three posture settings (upright, reclined and flatbed) and six other directional seating controls.

My seat ? 17D.

The 15.4-inch seatback-mounted television was actually a touchscreen, though also controlled by a detachable remote in the armrest and included dozens of Asian and Western movies, television shows, music, games, etc. The headsets weren?t impressive ? just normal headphones rather than noise-canceling, but the sound quality was okay.

The 15.4-inch seatback screens.

The overall look of the cabin is clean and reflects the blue sky and fluffy clouds outside the plane, making the space feel light and airy. The lighting effects in the cabin were also pretty cool, changing from a sort of sunset-hued orange-purple to dark blue, then lighting up gradually again for the second meal service and arrival.

The seat fully extended into a bed.

Amenities
The seatbacks contained gray Korean Air slippers so passengers could remove their shoes and walk around the cabin without getting their socks grimy. Before takeoff, the flight attendants passed out fabric amenity kits including a travel toothbrush and toothpaste set, a folding brush-comb and eye-mask as well as Davi skincare products including lip balm and eye cream. Unfortunately, no pajamas!

The amenity kit.

The one thing that was really missing was ear plugs ? an essential when trying to get some sleep on a long flight. Luckily, the flight attendants had disposable pairs to hand out on request, so I was able to snag some, but I don?t know why they?re not standard with the amenities kits.

Food and Drink
As is typical with Asian airlines, each of the meals (lunch and dinner) included both Eastern and Western options.

Lunch started with a roasted zucchini and eggplant rolled with cream cheese and an appetizer of seared tuna with sesame dressing or tomato cream soup. For a main, I chose the typical Korean bibimbap with minced beef, seasonal vegetables, sesame oil and Gochujang hot pepper paste. The Western choices were either grilled beef tenderloin with thyme-red wine sauce, or roasted cod with chive cream sauce over angel hair. Next came the cheese tray and then lemon tart and ice cream for dessert.

My lunch of bibimbap.

Mid-flight, the attendants put out snacks in the galley areas and served ramen soup bowls to those who asked as well as fresh-baked cookies.

A couple hours before landing, dinner was served. It included a light garden salad with Italian dressing, main course choices of braised chicken bulgogi, seafood linguini with herb-cream sauce or pork and shrimp wonton noodle soup, with seasonal fresh fruit to finish. Just a side note: they brightened the cabin for this meal service and then made it dark again afterwards. It was slightly jarring since it was bright as day for about an hour there and dark otherwise. My suggestion would be if you want to sleep through the flight, to ask them not to disturb you and to wear your eye mask and ear plugs. For my flight it was fine since I didn?t want to sleep too much and end up jet lagged.

The wine list was decent but not remarkable. The onboard champagne was Laurent-Perrier while the white wines included a white Bordeaux Chateau Saint Genes 2010 and Kendall Jackson Sauvignon Blanc. The red wines were Chateau Haut Bages Monpelou 2007 from Bordeaux and Robert Mondavi Privatre Selection 2010 Merlot from California. The interesting thing was, the glasses were tiny Schott Zwiesel glasses the size of thimbles, so flight attendants had to constantly pour and repour.

Cocktails and other spirits included Chivas Regal 18 Year Old Rare, Glenfiddich 15-Year, Absolut, Beefeater and Bacardi as well as Tio Pepe Dry Sherry and Sandeman?s Founders Reserve Port.

Though the service was at times brusque ? I think this had more to do with the language barrier, though most of the ladies on my flight spoke English quite well. Overall, the flight attendants were very efficient and friendly, smiling, stopping to chat and make sure passengers were comfortable. Several even taught me some Korean words and phrases.

The Absolut ?Celestial Lounge? at the aft of the top deck.

The aft bar area of the top deck is called Celestial Bar & Lounge? and is actually a collaboration between Korean Air and Absolut vodka. Between and after meal services, there is a bartender on duty (one of the flight attendants) who mixes signature cocktails from a special menu for passengers. The lounge was designed with special, shimmery wallpaper with swirls of clouds, vines and Absolute bottles.

The lounge also has a small bookshelf with art and travel books for passengers to flip through. The crew put out little snacks like candy, sandwiches and canap?s to nibble on as well, and because this was a day flight, there were several passengers hanging out at any given time. The downside is, there?s nothing else to drink there ? it?s all Absolut cocktails all the time. Still, the one with champagne and ice wine with an orange twist was delicious, and passengers could always venture to the front snack bar to find other goodies.

The duty free boutique at the back of the lower deck.

You can also wander down the aft staircase to the small duty free showcase where a flight attendant is on duty to spritz you with various perfumes and try to sell you liquor, but it?s pretty neat to have a fancy little boutique onboard the plane.

I had high expectations for Korean Air given their sleek marketing and the mileage requirement for an award ticket, and I have to say, my expectations were met. The cabin was spotless, the service was diligent (and I love the uniforms), the food was tasty enough for an airplane, the entertainment was good and the ride was smooth. All in all, I had a great experience.

If you want to book Korean awards, you can now search and book at Delta.com and use your SkyMiles at 120,000 miles roundtrip for business class to Asia and 80,000 for economy (Delta does not permit Korean First Class awards).

    Voting illustrations - Norman Rockwell
Apparently there are some 90 million potential voters here in the U.S. who will not be exercising their right to vote today ? perhaps too busy, too lazy, too put off by the relentless negativity of the campaigns, or just too unconcerned with the outcome of the election to be bothered. Maybe they simply think the election doesn?t affect them or things they care about.

If any of you who are reading this are among those 90 million, think on this: the next U.S. president will set a tone for the nation, and his intentions will likely become law in some areas of particular importance to art and artists in this country.

If you think the world of art and artists is somehow removed from, and unaffected by, national politics ? look again.

The two presidential candidates have distinctly different views on the importance of the arts in society, and the role of government in providing an environment in which the arts can thrive ? notably in the form of government funding for the arts, art related programs in schools, public funding for museums, libraries, public art spaces and organizations like the National Endowment for the Arts and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

Americans for the Arts Action Fund, a non-partisan, not-for-profit organization dedicated to promoting legislation favorable to the arts, has compiled a chart of the 2012 Presidential Candidates Arts Positions, and a Congressional Report Card that may help you understand where the candidates stand on issues affecting the arts in the U.S.

    It matters.

There are countries in this world where people literally risk their lives to cast a ballot; here, all you have to do is get out from behind the computer for 20 minutes and drive down to the polls.

    Really.

Two of this season?s underachieving teams will meet on Monday Night Football tonight, Monday Nov 5, as the Philadelphia Eagles hit the Big Easy to take on the New Orleans Saints. The Eagles look to break a three game skid, while the Saints look to rebound after last week?s loss after back to back wins. It doesn?t look good for Vick, as NFL sportsbooks have the home team Saints as -3 point home favorites against the Eagles with the over/under set at 52.5 points. We recommend you check out the latest NFL Point Spreads heading into the ninth MNF of the 2012 NFL season.

Philadelphia (3-4, 1-2 V) suffered a 17-30 loss to undefeated Atlanta last week. Initial reports had Eagles coach Andy Reid mulling the idea of a change at quarterback. Despite the talk, Michael Vick will resume his traditional role of starting.

He?s says he?s going back to being the old Michael Vick. Defenses, beware. ?I?m only human just like everybody else, so I think I was just trying to cater to certain things and trying to be what everybody wanted me to be,? he said Thursday. ?The most important thing is I?ve just got to let it go, get my swag back. I?ve got to go back to playing football the way I love to play, and it?s not worrying about what?s going to happen because that?s out of my control.?

Although he scored two touchdowns, running back LeSean McCoy was held to just 45 yards against the Falcons. McCoy could take the mounting pressure off the Eagles? passing game by getting untracked against the Saints, who allowed 225 yards on the ground to the Broncos. Vick could feast on a New Orleans defense which has yielded an average of 474.7 yards per contest this season ? 50 yards more than 31st-ranked Buffalo.

New Orleans (2-5, 1-2 H) suffered a 14-34 setback to Denver, in Week 8. Last Sunday was interim coach Joe Vitt?s first contest since returning to the sideline from suspension. The top-rated passing game mustered just 213 yards as New Orleans? two-game winning streak came to an end. Once again, a porous defensive effort contributed mightily to the Saints? undoing ? a factor which could help the Eagles snap a three-game losing skid.

The high-octane offense of New Orleans is expected to give new Philadelphia defensive coordinator Todd Bowles plenty to think about. TE Jimmy Graham returned from a one-game absence due to a sprained right ankle with five catches, 63 yards and a score. Marques Colston posted the same numbers, but was held without a touchdown for the first time in three games.

The Saints? rushing attack has been limited to 72.6 yards per game this season ? a full 12.5 yards less than 31st-ranked Oakland. 3. New Orleans is the first team since 1950 to allow 400 yards in seven consecutive games.
