So, How Much Do You Really Pay in Taxes? ? The GSCPA House ...

Written by: Colin Blalock, Chair GSCPA (The Pessimistic Optimist)

From May 15th to May 19th I was in Washington D.C. attending a conference celebrating the 125th Year Anniversary of the American Institute of CPAs (?AICPA?).? The AICPA is a longtime advocate of sound tax policy, transparency and simplification.? It is important for citizens to know that a tax exists, how is it imposed and when a tax law changes.? At the start of the conference it was announced that the AICPA has released a tax calculator that can be used by everyone. ?The following is almost verbatim from the AICPA announcement.

?Announcing the TOTAL TAX INSIGHTS CALCULATOR to help taxpayers better understand their estimated annual tax responsibilities.? The AICPA?s Total Tax Insights calculator is a one-of-a-kind online tool that links federal taxes with the country?s myriad state and local tax conventions? more than 20 types of the most widely applied taxes in all? to provide users with an approximation of their particular tax obligations.?

The calculator is customized for each state and designed for easy use.? It includes, for example, real estate taxes by county, school district taxes, federal and state cell phone taxes, federal and state gasoline taxes, and many more.? A simple online form asks the user for minimal information to get started.? It should be noted that none of the information is captured, retained, or used by anyone including the AICPA.? Once you have ?computed your tax? you can print the information and delete it from the computer.

The AICPA feels that there are a number of valuable insights for citizens, including:

  • Greater understanding of the number and variety of taxes they pay, and estimated amounts for each;
  • Increased awareness of the need for solid financial planning in order to make better-informed financial decisions;
  • Improved knowledge of the tax ramifications of changing jobs, making large purchases, deciding whether to buy or rent a home, and other pivotal actions.

Note that the Total Tax Insights calculator is not a tax preparation tool or a substitute for expert tax and financial advice of a trusted CPA.? However, it delivers a great deal of useful information with very little effort.

Visit www.totaltaxinsights.org and enter the information.? You will find it very interesting, useful and, as they say, insightful.

Google's Letting Companies Pay for Search Results [Google Inc]

At one point, Google was proud to offer up its search results and services without any sponsored content. That seems to be changing in a pretty aggressive way, though. Google is apparently compensated by the vendors that appear in its Flight Search and Hotel Finder vertical search engines. More »

Soft- Skills Training Needs in Indian BPOs: Authentic Journeys

By: Jennifer Kumar
Edited by: Sufi Swarup

TeamworkSoft-skills training and development became a hot topic in India since the early 2000s when outsourcing, offshoring, BPOs, and call centers were all the rage. In his paper entitled Soft-skills Training and Cultural Sensitization of Indian BPO workers: A Qualitative Study, Ramesh Subramaniam says that new hires in BPOs and call centers in Bangalore in the mid 2000s were given up to 90 days of soft skill training to fill in the gaps and also to sensitize the workers to a foreign culture.

Though this study focused on a particular company based in Bangalore, it can be said that other companies may have similar policies on training. From my experience in Kochi, India, the key difference between now and the mid 2000s is that there is less focus on accent reduction (although this continues to be a problem). This study also covered several topics about the training programs including how they were delivered, who delivered them, and in special cases, who received the training.

What are soft-skills?
Being a ?soft-skills? trainer, many ask me to define soft-skills. Soft-skills is a common term in India. In the U.S., we may call ?soft-skills? by other terms, such as social skills, customer service skills, etiquette training, public speaking skills, and so on. Soft-skills in the Indian sense encompasses all those topics along with other topics such as accent reduction, cross-cultural training, cross-cultural communication, global English, problem solving skills, time management, motivation, leadership, e-mail, and phone etiquette, among others. One can say that soft-skills encompass the aspects of the job that are not ?hard-skills.? At the same time, ?soft-skills? are critical to carry out the hard skills within an organization and with customers, clients, and stakeholders.

How are soft-skills taught?
Soft-skills classes in Indian firms are generally given in big classroom settings (for between 10-13 weeks), with minimal one on one coaching. The idea is to get as many through the program as possible. Here large numbers look impressive. However, this training, which is also looked upon as coaching for personal development, would be much more productive if it is delivered and retained in smaller group settings (under 20) or ideally in one-on-one settings.

According to Mr. Subramaniam, in the company featured in his study, soft-skills training was typically delivered in various stages:
Listening Comprehension
Role Play
Real Time Coaching
Performance Monitoring and Assessment

The training was often delivered in large groups for the first three sections. The last stage was within months after the training as managers and employees themselves notice their strengths, challenges, improvements, and shortcomings. Based on their shortcomings, more training may have been assigned in groups or in individual settings. In cases where verbal (or even, possibly, written) communication was a problem, snippets of the communication was given to a trainer to analyze and provide feedback on the steps for improvement. Based on what had to be improved, it was undertaken in small groups (if others had similar issues) or in one-on-one sessions. In most cases, individual sessions were more productive, as the employee didn?t feel nervous or shy to complete the challenging articulation exercises in front of others (among the other self-confidence and personal issues that may arise from personal development work such as language learning). In other cases, individual sessions were mixed and mingled with group work as the client?s need dictated.

Personal issues that arise are many and few are documented. In the article, Mr. Subramaniam quotes De as saying, ?The strain of assuming foreign accents not to mention personalities for long periods causes everything from sore throats to personality disorders.? This is meaningful information and as a trained coach and social worker with years of experience in coaching and counseling people with cross-cultural identity concerns and other mental and emotional challenges, I am not surprised. Balancing professional and personal life becomes even more pertinent and meaningful when the professional life requires one to adapt another culture, language, personality, and mannerism day in and day out. This is an issue that a language trainer on his/her own is unequipped to handle in most cases, but, can be better handled by someone who can teach both articulation and coach through the emotional concerns that arise due to managing multiple identities.

Who is assigned to teach these sessions?
Companies could utilize internally hired trainers or external trainers. There were pros and cons in utilizing either of them. In cases where a foreign culture had to be taught, most companies preferred to hire a native from that country as they were the best to give the employees first hand knowledge of the culture and language patterns.

In this study, in-person training delivery was discussed. Online and live webinar training delivery was not discussed.

Conclusions and recommendations
In this study, one learns about the process of hiring and training Indian workers in call centers and BPOs based on the information provided by one company. Having interacted with a few companies in Kochi, a city southwest of Bangalore, I noticed that the processes vary slightly based on the company. While it appears that the market is saturated for this kind of training in Bangalore in 2012, it seems to be just coming up in Kochi.

While in-person delivery by natives from the culture is preferred in a majority of cases, e-learning, teleconference, and webinars are gaining ground. Though corporates are exposed to these alternative forms of training, the Indian culture values face-to-face in-person interaction. Another idea that is gaining ground is that local Indians with more experience abroad become trained in a cross-cultural pre-departure program and then deliver that to their employees to avoid the costs of flying in and accommodating foreigners in five star hotels. Foreigners living as expats in India who deliver such trainings are the best bet, especially if they are charging lower rates than foreign based trainers.

In general, companies still prefer to train in big bulky sessions, where personal interaction from the trainer may not be possible. However, it?s noted that of late, companies in and around Kochi that this author has talked to have started taking interest in smaller group sessions or individual sessions for key employees. These one-on-one or small group (three and under) sessions are often requested for particular employees who require additional, specialized coaching. Some topics in this training are: e-mail etiquette, time management, creative thinking, problem solving skills, managing cross-cultural communication, understanding cross-cultural nuances, and preparation for special meetings or foreign visits, among other special reasons. In some cases, learning American accent or accent neutralization also factor into these specialized coaching options.

It is imperative that companies that employee local Indians who must communicate with clients, stakeholders, and customers abroad, continue to attend cross-cultural training. Though American media may be readily available on Indian cable, Hollywood cannot be used as a cross-cultural understanding tool on it?s own without understanding the American values and mindset that motivate the behaviors. The training is not about ?Americanizing? but learning how to relate better to Americans to create better long lasting relationships. Instead of seeing cross-cultural training as a threat to one?s identity, it should be seen as a learning tool, just like other tools that can help one succeed in the cross-cultural workplace.

Coaching sessions are available in small groups, individual soft-skills, and in-person Spoken English (Kochi, India) or via the Internet. Contact her at authenticjourneys@gmail.com.

Norms for investment in real estate business in India by NRI ...

Posted on Monday, May 28th, 2012

real estate investmentInvestment in real estate plays a dominant role to the NRIs due to its rate of appreciation and the periodical returns on the investment.

According to the new investment norm, NRIs can invest through their representatives in India by giving a power of attorney to act on their behalf.

A copy of the power of attorney should be notarized with the Indian consulate in the respective country which will provide authenticity on their behalf for an investment in property in India.

If a NRI decides to acquire a house through a power of attorney, he can still proceed abroad. As the power of attorney holder accompanied by the actual possession of the property through the agreement to sell is deemed to be the owner of the property.

A general power of attorney in favor of the NRI?s relatives will enable them to sell the property and arrange to repatriate the sale proceeds through an authorized foreign exchange dealer after payment of the taxes due. They can also rent out the property and credit the proceeds to a NRO account.

RBI also said that any citizen who was earlier residing in a foreign country can own or transfer property or other assets in that nation if it was acquired during the time of his residence there.

Boulder police looking for suspect in 2 burglaries on University Hill

Composite sketch of a suspect in a May 11, 2012 burglary (Boulder Police Department)

Boulder police are investigating two residential burglaries in the University Hill area that may have been committed by the same person.

In both burglaries a suspect took laptops, and witnesses provided similar descriptions of the suspect.

The first burglary occurred on May 11 in the 900 block of University Avenue around 1:37 a.m. Two male roommates and a friend were home when one of them saw a man enter a bedroom from the outside and heard glass shattering. When they checked the room, a laptop was missing.

In the second case, a woman was moving out of her apartment in the 100 block of 12th Street on May 14 at 5:25 p.m. As she was walking to her car with some boxes she noticed a man going up the stairs to her building.

'Like' this: Salutes to troops to flood Facebook feeds

Memorial Day is not just unforgettable: Thanks to Facebook it's also inescapable.

Salutes to troops past and present will be showing up every few seconds, this weekend, if the pace of posting is anything like Memorial Day 2011. Experts and everyday Facebook users say the social media Goliath has rearranged our thinking of how to mark this and every other holiday.

"The pressure is on to show you remember the birthday or national holiday, that you're not the bad friend or the bad daughter who forgot," says Sara Linton, 28, of Oakland.

Linton says she'll soon post an image of one of her most precious possessions, a framed letter from her grandfather, Ted Linton, to his wife, her grandmother Thora, on VJ Day in 1945.

"I'm proud we get to honor people and remember what they did," Linton says. "Posting something unique and real makes Facebook less superficial."

Vets and families of vets, we want you! Tweet us your memories, photos that show how military service has affected you: #uswarstories

Facebook holiday posts are a contagious phenomenon, encouraging users to mark every celebratory moment on line. "Likes" for Facebook's own flag-emblazoned Memorial Day page passed 102,000 by this week.

It's about the urge to be known, just like getting a tattoo or putting a bumper sticker on the car or running up the flag in front of the house on Monday, says Sam Gosling, a psychology professor at University of Texas, Austin, and author of Snoop: What your stuff says about you.

Sara Linton

Sara Linton plans to post to Facebook an image of one of her most precious possessions, a framed letter from her grandfather, Ted Linton, to his wife, her grandmother Thora, on VJ Day in 1945.

These are all "symbolic acts ? part of identity claiming, of saying to the world, 'This is who I am.' "

Ed Reiman presents his Facebook and Twitter identity as a husband, a grandfather and a retired businessman in Portland, Ore., and ? perhaps, most telling of all ? as a Vietnam Veteran who came home, crippled by post traumatic stress syndrome, on July 4, 1968.

Steve Barnhoorn

Steve Barnhoorn plans to post a picture of his great-grandfather Benjamin Pennington to Facebook over Memorial Day weekend.

Reiman, 65, tweeted at #USWarstories this week: "Was in Vietnam in the Army ? '67/'68 ? thru "Tet" ? survived ? think about it and friends I lost there everyday, but have lived well, raised a family ? have 'grands' ? and am now retired. I am blessed."

He has mixed feelings about the outpouring of Memorial Day posts on Facebook.

"I appreciate it. I think most folks are sincere. But I also think some people are trying to get rid of their own guilt for not speaking up sooner against the Vietnam War or for turning a cold shoulder to those veterans for 20 or 30 years," Reiman says.

He says he'll post this weekend on Facebook about "my pride in the people I knew and served beside."

Few Americans still mark the original way to celebrate Memorial Day with a visit to a veteran's grave. The Department of Veterans Affairs predicts more than 100,000 visitors to National Cemeteries this Monday, about the same as 2011. But there are 117 events for real time visits listed on the National Cemeteries Facebook Page, which has 3,389 likes.

Social media aren't necessarily to blame for the shift in observance. Given the mobile society, few people live near their own loved ones' graves any more.

" 'Local' is different now. Social media mean local is your computer, not your city," says Barbara Kemmis, executive director of the Cremation Association of North America.

So Steve Barnhoorn, 49, of Honeoye, N.Y, is a 'local' neighbor, one who invites you over to his place ? on Facebook ? to see his posts on veterans he reveres.

This weekend, watch for his post on his maternal great-grandfather Benjamin Pennington, who was "gassed in action" and wounded by enemy fire in World War I, and survived to be decorated with the Purple Heart.

Ever since Barnhoorn joined Facebook in 2009, he's posted for Veterans Day, and Pearl Harbor Day, Dec. 7, too. That's when he posts a photo of his great-grand-uncle Earl Frary, who was serving aboard the USS Vestal when the Japanese bombs rained down.

"The world should know about these great people. I get all kinds of positive comments back. People say, 'Wow, I didn't know you had that personal tie to history,' " Barnhoorn says.

For those who need help crafting creative forms of gratitude on Facebook holidays, fear not. There are apps for that. The site also offer 13 apps for showing appreciation for Father's Day, from Instagram-ing childhood photos of Pop, to a video I-love-you via Viddy.

For Memorial Day, those who don't have grandpa's World War II snapshots or inspiring letters can draw on free illustrations from sites such as Satisfaction.com. It features 10 choices from a red-white-and-blue eagle flapping its wings to a bikini-busting beauty straddling a tank gun barrel.

Facebook posts also remind folks that partying and shopping are almost holiday duties.

AllFacebook, an unofficial Facebook blog from Web Media Brands, noted just days before Memorial Day last year, posts mentioning the holiday were chiefly invitations to barbecues and parties or pitches to shop holiday sales.

Blogger Jackie Cohen observed, "Only the occasional post addresses the fact that the holiday honors those who've died in military service," and only 20% of Americans knew the original purpose of the day.

Facebook holiday mentions roughly double every year in posts by the 500 largest public branded corporate pages (the ones with the most Facebook fans), according to Socialbakers, a media analytics company.

In 2012, there was a 73% jump in branded pages that wished folks Happy Mother's Day. Of all the branded paged with posts on Facebook that day, about 25% made a holiday mention.

On Memorial Day 2011, roughly one in four of the 185 posts that day on commercially branded pages made mention of the holiday.

"We expect that this Memorial Day brands will be commenting on the holiday more than they ever have in the past," says Socialbakers' CEO Jan Rezab.

Yet, the old-fashioned way of celebrating with a greeting card is undiminished by the competition from social media, says Jaci Twidwell, a spokeswoman for Hallmark Cards.

The urge to share runs on parallel tracks. Even as holiday wishes soar on line, people are still exchanging cards at the rate of 13 million a day, Twidwell says.

"Electronic communications are better for sharing information, but greeting cards are better for sharing emotion," Twidwell says. "You can't put a Facebook post in the shoebox under your bed. It doesn't replace the pleasure of getting something tangible in the mailbox. What Facebook has done is give us more options."

Rest assured, on the word of Emily Post's great-great-granddaughter and etiquette authority Anna Post. She says there's nothing rude about posting holiday greetings, "as long as you spend time off line with the people who matter most."

Smart phone avalanche buries computer industry ? The Hindu: Mobile

http://m.thehindu.com/sci-tech/technology/article3454978.ece/?secid=2789

The personal computer has dominated modern life for 25 years, but the often bulky devices are increasingly giving way to smaller, lighter smart phones and tablet computers.

The whole sector is scrambling to survive the avalanche set off by Apple under its late founder, Steve Jobs.

Technology giant Hewlett-Packard, whose business is still built on personal computers and printers, this week announced it would slash its payroll by 27,000 workers, or 8 per cent, by 2014 to eventually save at least 3 billion dollars a year. Managers were admitting to Wall Street that HP?s future was as a smaller company.

The world?s largest PC manufacturer has so far failed to connect with consumer demand for smart phones and tablets ? a new technology landscape of slender mobile devices dominated by Silicon Valley?s Apple and South Korea?s Samsung.

A world of mobile computing appears to have only a small space left for Hewlett-Packard, as well as PC competitor Dell, which has suffered shrinking sales recently. Both have failed to achieve the innovations to make a successful transition.

As early as 2010, when he launched the iPad, Jobs talked about the ?post-PC world.? Other manufacturers did not take his vision seriously, and they continued to make their big desktop machines and laptops. One of their biggest innovations was to make PCs in colours other than the old ?computer grey.? In time, Jobs was vindicated.

?Today, Apple is reinventing the phone,? he said in 2007, as he launched the iPhone.

At the time, it sounded like an exaggeration, but the cell phone with a touch-sensitive screen set new standards for performance and appearance. Above all, the iPhone redefined the industry, because for the first time it brought to the fore not the device but the software it holds: the apps.

At the start of 2010, Jobs dealt a definitive blow to the PC: he launched Apple?s tablet computer, the iPad. With it, the company again achieved a resounding success.

Over the past quarter alone, 35 million iPhones have been sold, along with close to 12 million iPads. By comparison, based on the data of market research firm Gartner, 89 million PCs were sold over the same period by all manufacturers put together.

PC firms tried to come up with their own tablets, well before Apple did. More than 10 years ago in Las Vegas, Microsoft founder Bill Gates presented his vision of the digital table computer. The smartphone, too, is hardly Jobs? invention.

However, alternative devices were too expensive, inconvenient or just too ugly to become bestsellers.

Now, little is left for PC manufacturers to do but chase Apple and try not to miss the train altogether. Some of them continue to focus, successfully, on the traditional PC market, like the Chinese company Lenovo, whose boss Yang Yuanqing likes to talk of a ?PC-plus era.? A big fish like Hewlett-Packard, however, can hardly change overnight. For years, the US giant worked on perfecting its business of selling computers, complementing them with extras like printers and offering services for such equipment. It was a perfect long-term relationship with customers, or so HP managers thought.

HP reached the top of the industry 10 years ago through the expensive purchase of rival PC maker Compaq.

Change within the sector, however, threw them off balance. Their hardware sales dropped, their software business failed to grow fast enough, payment for acquisitions like security service provider SonicWall was still pending.

Prospects are good once the payroll is reduced, and share prices rose more than 3 per cent Thursday.

While Apple is surfing the mobile wave with the iPhone and iPad and setting trends in the notebook computer market with the MacBook, Hewlett-Packard does not even have smartphones and tablets on offer.

HP bought the smart phone pioneer Palm in 2010, but the management opted to close the company soon afterward, because it was uncompetitive.

PAC Attack: Americans for Legal Immigration fires back at KGUN9 ...

Congressional Candidate Jesse Kelly is still dodging our questions about a controversial endorsement by the group Americans for Legal Immigration Political Action Committee (ALIPAC), but the head of that group is speaking out.

ALIPAC is jumping into the fray, firing back at KGUN9 News because we asked a question that referenced quotes from Senator John McCain?s campaign and the American Defamation League (ADL), claiming ALIPAC is tied to white supremacists.

On its website, ALIPAC states its mission is to fight illegal immigration and amnesty, by working with Americans of every race and party. However, William Gheen, ALIPAC?s president, believes 9 On Your Side presented the organization in a negative light.

?Your coverage insulted or called us Nazis and we are not Nazis. We?re a multiracial organization that works with Black and Hispanic leaders and organizations that have spoken against groups and racism on many occasions,? Gheen said in a phone interview.

KGUN9 News did ask Jesse Kelly to answer a viewer?s question about ALIPAC?s endorsement, in an interviewed that aired Wednesday.

?Senator John McCain and the Anti-Defamation League denounced the group for having been backed by white supremacists, neo-Nazis and anti-Semites. Why then did you accept this endorsement ? and this is from Joe Evano.

But what can?t be disputed is this: Senator John McCain did condemn the group when his former political opponent J.D. Hayworth received ALIPAC?s endorsement. It appears that Gheen thinks the acknowledgement of that in itself is a problem.

?Most of the media outlets have looked at those exact same accusations over the years and found there was no real basis for those claims,? Gheen said. ?No other news agency has carried that aspersion except for KGUN9.?

Reporter Claire Doan pointed out that there were several articles on the Huffington Post and other news sites, mentioning the denouncement.

?I think there was one a while back during when John McCain made the announcement two years ago,? Gheen responded, then pointing out that KGUN9 News should not have resurrected the issue.

However, it was also ALIPAC that just last week came out the list of candidates it is endorsing.

The ADL claims white supremacists and neo-Nazis support ALIPAC and take action on its behalf. We reached out to the Southern Poverty Law Center, which lists ALIPAC as an extremist group.

?We don?t have any evidence that ALIPAC actively tries to work with neo-Nazis. It may be but we haven?t seen anything like that,? said Mark Potok, a senior fellow at Southern Poverty Law Center.

Still, Kelly chose not to defend ALIPAC in the May interview with Jennifer Waddell, and ducked the same question back in October 2010.

?Didn?t you apply for that endorsement and does that endorsement tie you in any way to the group?? Doan asked Kelly.

?We?re supported by a whole bunch of groups and we don?t know who supports those groups,? Kelly responded.

?But did you apply for their endorsement,? Doan asked again.

?We?re supported by a whole host of groups who like our stance on illegal immigration.?

So how does ALIPAC feel about that?

?Wouldn?t [Kelly] also be able to defend ALIPAC and say that it has nothing to do with neo-Nazis and that he?s proud of the endorsement he?s received?? Doan asked Gheen.

?It?s not his job to defend ALIPAC. He?s not in the know about everything that happens in our multifaceted national organization,? Gheen said. ?I want your viewers to know that there are a bunch of liberates at KGUN9 that are trying to influence the outcome of the congressional campaign and they?re resorting to laying about people being associated to neo-Nazis to accomplish that goal.?

Gheen said ALIPAC is a multiracial group that speaks out against racism; and that he personally has a history of helping elect the first blacks and first women in North Carolina.

For the record, KGUN9 News does not claim ALIPAC is tied to neo-Nazis. However, credible politicians and activists have made such claims, and 9?On Your Side believes those comments are fair game for political reporting.

Gheen said ALIPAC?s endorsement of Kelly stands, and the group applauds Kelly for rebuking KGUN9 in what Gheen thinks are efforts to engage in negative campaigning.

Selling Your Products On The Internet | Nuve SEO Website

There is an old adage that says that getting publicity of any kind is a good thing, but that is not the truth at all. This may have been the truth in days gone by, but right now it can mean the downfall of a business. Anyone can post bad things about your business online and make it seem as if you are the bad one. the following tips will show how to stay away from negativity online.

Having a blog helps a user to connect with you. While it is a good idea to be somewhat personal with visitors to your blog, do not forget that you are running a business and you want to be taken seriously. Always keep your blog updated or users will stop coming back to see it.

People love to see pets and when they find out that the owner?s pet is a mascot they fall in love with your company. This is because it makes the company look more human and people who have similar pets or love the pet the owner has are going to be drawn to the company.

People like to receive content on the spot. You may want to consider offering instant downloads of information. If you are selling an e-book, offer the first chapter for free. That will give the potential customer a chance to evaluate the e-book before purchasing.

Video marketing is also a great way to help drive traffic to your site. Check out these sites for helpful tips on how to create video and animated ads: Movie Making Software Free, Best Video Editing Software for Windows and Mac

Find a partner in a familiar place. While it is not advisable to go into business with your family or close friends, there is still room for you to find someone whose talents you are aware of, and who you get along with. Look around online forums you frequent, talk to people you already know. Perhaps there?s someone who you have always respected, or someone who has been asking to help?

Keep track of how popular each page is by counting visits and using a visit counter for different links on your site. You will then have a better idea of which links are the most visited within your site. Perhaps these links are more visible than others? Find out what makes these links popular and reproduce the same conditions for new important pages. You also need to find out which backlink is the most popular and get more similar links to other pages and articles of your site.

The URL you choose for your website needs to be something catchy and easy to remember. It should also contain either your keywords or your business name, or part of it. If your URL is easy to remember, visitors will be able to find you site a lot easier.

Where are Facebook's friends? Stock slide deepens

NEW YORK (AP) ? Facebook's newly public stock is sliding further on its third trading day as investors reconsider how much the social network is worth.

The company's long-anticipated initial public offering of stock raised $16 billion, valuing the company at $104 billion ? more than Amazon.com Inc., at $98 billion.

But Facebook's stock has plunged after the IPO. It fell $1.09, or 3.2 percent, to $32.94 in late morning trading Tuesday, after dropping as low as $30.98 earlier in the day. The latest price is 13 percent below the IPO price of $38 and values the company at about $91 billion.

Google Inc., meanwhile, is worth nearly $200 billion.

The downward spiral has left some people sitting on big losses and others scratching their heads. After all, nothing fundamental has changed at Facebook in the days since the much-hyped company came to Nasdaq Stock Market with a ticker symbol of "FB." Facebook still has more than 900 million users, its 28-year-old founder Mark Zuckerberg controls the company, and it is still one of the few profitable Internet companies to go public.

Facebook's IPO ? like Netscape's in 1995 and Google's in 2004 ? was billed as a milestone moment. Netscape's offering ushered in the era of the Internet browser. The company's stock more than doubled in its first day of trading. Google's IPO heralded the age of search. It posted an 18 percent gain in its stock market debut. Facebook was supposed to offer proof that social media is a viable business and more than a passing fad.

But investors don't seem convinced. Facebook's stock closed Monday at $34.03, down 11 percent from Friday's closing price of $38.23. The investment banks that arranged Facebook's offering set a price of $38 on Thursday. Although many investors had hoped for a big first-day pop, Facebook's stock opened Friday at $42.05 and fluctuated between $45 and $38 throughout the day.

For a host reasons, Facebook's falling share price shouldn't have been a surprise.

? Its IPO occurred the same week that the markets posted their worse performance so far in 2012. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 4 percent.

? Meanwhile, Europe was trying to avert financial disaster.

? At the same time, the American public's love affair with the stock market continued to wane. People have yanked more than $400 billion from U.S. stock mutual funds since 2008.

? Banks are being cautious, too. All this is happening in the backdrop where banks are under pressure from regulators to become more conservative after the financial crisis. "Regulators want banks to take less risk," said Larry Tabb, founder and CEO of Tabb Group, a markets research firm. "To support a $100 billion offering can be challenging in this environment."

? Investors were also spooked by the trading glitches at the Nasdaq on Friday. Some people weren't sure if their trades had been executed. Trading of the stock was delayed by a half-hour.

"It was like trying to get a jumbo jet to take off in turbulent weather," said Kathleen Shelton Smith, principal at Renaissance Capital, an IPO advisory firm. "It's going to be a bumpy ride."

With all of these factors in place on the day of Facebook's IPO, some people may wonder why Facebook's stock didn't do worse.

The answer: Facebook had some help. On Friday, Facebook only got as low as pennies above the offering price of $38 per share but never fell below. The banks that arranged the IPO, the deals underwriters such as Morgan Stanley and others, put in enough "buy" orders at $38 to keep the price from dropping below that level.

It's a customary gesture from underwriters to support the company they helped bring to market, explains Jay Ritter, a finance professor at the University of Florida. It's a way to save face and show that the company and the bankers gauged an appropriate level of demand from investors and valued the company correctly.

Pulling off a successful IPO means properly gauging supply and demand. The underwriters work with the company to decide how much stock to sell and at what price. Facebook sold 421 million shares. That was a lot of stock to sell. It is one of the largest IPOs on record.

Investors and the technology industry are closely tracking the Menlo Park, Calif.-based company's shares. In the same way that Netscape ushered in a new era for Internet darlings in 1995, Facebook may have done the opposite for similar companies waiting to go public today. There are 168 companies in the pipeline trying to raise $41 billion through IPOs in the U.S.

"Facebook has raised cost of capital for all the companies that come with an IPO in its wake," said Smith.

Facebook's falling share price may be a sign that investors are taking a rational look at the company's financial performance in comparison to its peers.

Though there are many ways to judge if a stock's price is too high or too low, one popular method is to compare it to earnings. The so-called price-earnings ratio, divides a company's stock price by the company's annual earnings per share. A higher ratio suggests a stock is expensive because, in a sense, it takes more years of earnings for investors to get back they paid for it. A lower ratio suggests it is cheap.

By this logic, Facebook looks expensive compared with some companies. It is trading at 74 times its earnings in the past year, according to FactSet, a research firm. That compares with Apple at 13.7 times and Google at 18.6 times. The Nasdaq index of technology stocks trades at 20.8 times.

"There must have been some sober second thoughts about this," said Brian Wieser, an analyst at Pivotal Research Group who was first to come out with a "Sell" rating on Facebook's stock on Friday.

It's not that he believes the world's largest online social network is a bad investment. But at $38 per share, it's just too expensive considering the risks associated with Facebook's brief history and unproven advertising model, he says. His fair price, or "target price," is $30.

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter, who came out with an "Outperform" rating on Facebook before its IPO, said he believes the investment banks that arranged the offering overestimated demand for the company's stock.

Facebook originally set a price range of $28 to $35 for its IPO, which would have valued the company at $95 billion at the high end. Last Tuesday, though, it increased the price range to $34 to $38 per share, valuing the company at as much as $104 billion.

Then, responding to extraordinary demand from prospective investors, the company announced on Wednesday that it would add 84 million shares to the offering. The shares came entirely from the company's early investors ? such as Goldman Sachs and venture capitalist Peter Thiel. The fact that these investors were offloading more stock instead of hanging on to it may have served as a warning sign to new investors.

"The late addition of 84 million shares to the offering overwhelmed demand, limiting the first day price," Pachter said in a note to investors.

Aside from rational risk calculations, some investors "un-friended" Facebook for emotional reasons on Monday. Alper Aydinoglu, a student at DePaul University in Chicago sold all 50 shares that he got via E-Trade at $38 last week. He took an 11 percent loss.

"I'm not willing to stick through the volatility," Aydinoglu said.
