What is Love?

FATHER ROBERT SPITZER, S.J. Love is looking for the good news in the other, leading to the acceptance of the other as a lovable self, giving rise to the desire to be with the other and to do good for the other, giving rise to a unity with the other, whereby it is just as easy (if not easier) to do good for the other as to do it for self, which yields mutual acceptance, shared being and doing, and interpersonal unity.

Love is not a stoic act of will in which one heroically overlooks the nastiness of the other.? I do not look at the bad news in the other, noting all of his weak and irritating features, and then say, "It is my Christian duty to love that irritating, boorish, weak, and inferior thing.? Therefore, I will, I will, I really will!"? Clearly enough, there is no love in that.? This is simply the comparison game on skates.

Evidently, love must begin with looking for the good news in the other.? From this, love grows quite effortlessly.? True love revels in the good news, while "stoic love" focuses on the bad news and congratulates itself for looking beyond it.? Sometimes the good news may seem remote or inaccessible, particularly when the other is acting mean spirited or difficult.? Even then, true love enables one to recall the good news and remember that the other is the good news and not the transiently apparent bad news.

The lovability of the other draws me out of myself and makes me want to give myself to the other.? The greatest gift I can give is my acceptance.? Acceptance means letting the other into my inner world, letting the other matter to me.? Love approaches unity when it becomes just as easy, if not easier, to do something for the other as to do it for myself.? Parents, for example, often find it easier to do things for their children than for themselves.

True love is about giving and reciprocity.? The spirit has an inherent need to create something of value outside itself.? We do this in relationships.? A deep relationship may become a unity, which might be termed interpersonal personhood, in which the connection between two persons takes on a life of its own.? Each discovers that part of his personhood is derived from that connection.? The person is not merely an autonomous island, but interpersonal, connected to others with varying degrees of affinity.

The care of the other, the other's response and being, switch something on inside me ? they ignite my spirit.? Further, I ignite the other, and I know it.? My care and response make the other come alive, and I enjoy providing this good.? It seems to justify my existence.? I feel I contribute something important to the other, that I have left an effect that could last an eternity.? Alone, I am a mere shadow of myself ? a shadow of what I could give, of what the other could make come alive in me.? But in relationship, I come alive.? From the ego perspective of the second level of happiness, personhood may appear autonomous, but from the love perspective of Happiness 3, personhood is interpersonal.? Pure autonomy would seem to be the emotional equivalent of amputation.

Deep interpersonal unity becomes a living entity; our me's meld into an us.? The relationship becomes an interpersonal person.? When this degree of unity occurs in marriage or deep friendship, it becomes necessary for the friends or couple to find a common vision or shared cause larger than themselves, for a relationship, like an individual, must reach beyond itself or wither.? There are many goods beyond "ourselves": common projects or ideals, children, or the community, to name a few.? Relationships not oriented to larger purposes often stagnate.? Lovers can look into each other's eyes with such infatuation that they become for each other the pool of Narcissus ? they gaze so deeply that they fall in and drown.

While infatuation is to be expected in newlyweds, the healthy marriage grows beyond that stage.? Couples whose relationship has grown beyond infatuation will tend to include others within their unity (although each is capable of relating separately.)? They will extend some of their mutual acceptance to others, including them within the family circle.? Conversely, infatuated couples not only will exclude outsiders; they also will avoid goals beyond each other.? Without connections to others, with no thought of good beyond themselves, their relationship becomes an island no more self-sufficient than that of an autonomous individual, just twice as big.

To be fulfilled, love must move beyond itself to a greater good.? The greater good need not be a person: Happiness 3 can also be experienced through serving a cause or an ideal.? A relationship that does not reach out to a shared goal loses its connection with the world.? When we are not a part of the whole, we feel great alienation.? Without external connection, a relationship lacks objective validation of its worth.? Like an individual, an "interpersonal person" without a larger purpose feels empty and useless.? Relationship is not, therefore, an end in itself.? It is a means toward love and good."

Too Busy To Peel Garlic? Try The 20-Second Microwave Tip

If I were rich, I might hire a sous chef. But for now, I'm learning to cheat time. And here's a new way I've stumbled upon to save a minute or two every time I use garlic.

Toss it in the microwave. I put the whole bulb in ? 15 to 20 seconds will do the trick. It makes peeling much easier. The cloves practically slide -? or pop ? out of their skins, though I won't make any promises about stickiness.

But, since I'm on the science desk, I have to ask, how does it work?

?

I emailed Gavin Sacks, assistant professor in the department of food science at Cornell University. "My guess is that ... the microwave will heat the water in the garlic, causing cells to rupture," he says. The resulting steam breaks the bonds between the skins and the flesh.

Any down side? Well, microwaving the garlic is akin to blanching it, which Sacks explains will partially inactivate some enzymes. "Since the pungent compound in garlic is formed enzymatically, once raw garlic is crushed or cut, it is likely that the resulting microwaved garlic will be less pungent than non-microwaved garlic."

Hmmm ... I didn't taste any difference when I tried it. Maybe it's just a weensy-bit less pungent? Or maybe I was getting used to the slightly duller flavor in the jar of pre-peeled garlic.

The tip comes from Cook's Illustrated magazine, where they've put together a bunch of readers' tips section in the November/December issue.

"We go through a lot of garlic in my house," Jack Bishop, editorial director of the magazine, tells me.

The microwave tip comes in handy especially when a recipe calls for many, many cloves of garlic that need peeling.

But really, despite some foodies' philosophical opposition to the the microwave, or perhaps the aversion that comes from getting burned by the bowl while the soup stays cold, or fears about food safety, it can be a key kitchen tool in the cook's arsenal.

As home cooks see how the pros are using the microwave on cooking shows, "I think it has come back somewhat into fashion," Bishop says. "You can actually do some smart things with it," like starting baked potatoes in it so they cook faster in the oven, and drying herbs from your garden in it.

"The microwave is really just a piece of technology, not one to be scared of," he says.

Anyway, it's worth a try. And no worries, there's no plastic involved.

Exclusive: AEG auction starts; Anschutz seeks bids in $10 billion range

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Billionaire Phil Anschutz has kicked off the auction of his Anschutz Entertainment Group, with an expectation that the sports and entertainment giant should draw bids in the $10 billion range, higher than previously believed, according to sources familiar with the situation.

The initial, 25-page AEG information memorandum that describes the business but has no financial information was expected to go to "dozens" of potential buyers on Monday, the sources said. The initial group of recipients is expected to include rich individuals, rivals, sovereign wealth funds, real estate firms, and private equity firms, they said.

Anschutz is likely to start signing non-disclosure agreements and send out the books with financial details by the end of the month, the sources said.

The list of potential bidders includes trade buyers such as Liberty Media Corp ; investment companies such as Guggenheim Partners LLC; private equity firms such as Thomas H. Lee Partners LP, Bain Capital LLC and Colony Capital LLC; and rich individuals such as Los Angeles biotech billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong, sources have previously said.

Bidders are likely to need to come up with bids in the "high single digit, low double digit" billion dollars to proceed to the next round, the sources said, signaling that Anschutz has a higher price expectation than previously believed.

Sources close to potential buyers had said last month that the company could fetch between $6 billion and $8 billion in a sale.

"The Anschutz Co has no comment on the sales process beyond its press release announcing the sales process," it said in a statement on Monday. As a private owner, the Denver-based billionaire has the final say in any deal.

Anschutz said last month that it was exploring a sale of AEG and had hired Blackstone Advisory Partners to advise it on the process.

AEG, which has around 25,000 employees, has developed more than 100 entertainment venues globally, in some of the world's largest cities such as Los Angeles, London, Berlin and Shanghai. These include the Staples Center in Los Angeles, The O2 Arena in London and the Mercedes-Benz Arena in Shanghai.

The company also owns sports assets that include the Los Angeles Galaxy Major League Soccer team, possibly best-known for its star David Beckham, and a stake in the National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Lakers.

The idea behind AEG broadly is to own the real estate and draw people to the venues through sporting events and live entertainment. Anschutz wants to keep the AEG platform in one piece because he believes the company's holdings are more valuable as a group than in individual pieces, the sources said.

The price expectations and Anschutz's insistence on keeping the platform and the management team in place, however, adds complexity to an eventual sale.

A buyer would need to write a large check for the company, including their own cash and bank financing, which could make it necessary for bidders to form consortiums.

There are no easy comparisons for potential buyers to draw on in valuing the company. What's more, Anschutz will need to get approvals from sports organizations such as the National Hockey League and the National Basketball Association to be able to transfer ownership of sports teams.

A valuation analysis could eventually include a sum of the parts determination, the sources said. For example, one of the sources said, the Staples Center in Los Angeles alone could be worth around $1 billion.

Blackstone bankers are also planning to keep control of how bidding groups are formed, the sources said. The confidentiality agreement with potential buyers is expected to have a provision that will prevent parties from discussing joint bids.

The requirement is sometimes imposed by sellers in auctions to prevent bidders from forming groups as a way to undercut on price and possibly to help broker deals between bidders when the size of the asset is large.

Later on in the auction, possibly around the second round, the advisers also plan to launch a parallel process to seek approvals from the various sports leagues for the bidders, the sources said.

Blackstone bankers used a similar approach when they advised on the sale of the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team earlier this year, which eventually sold for $2 billion to Guggenheim Baseball Management, a group that includes Los Angeles Lakers star Magic Johnson and one-time Hollywood studio executive Peter Guber.

In the Dodgers deal Johnson was the "face" of the consortium, a preference among sports leagues that usually insist on an individual rather than an institution buying the franchises.

Anschutz is likely to look to pair up the bidders in a similar manner as well, the sources said.

Blackstone declined to comment.

Aquino said the "framework agreement" ? a roadmap for a new autonomous region for minority Muslims in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation's south ? was an assurance the Moro Islamic Liberation Front insurgents will no longer aim to secede from the country.

The agreement, to be signed Oct. 15 in Manila, spells out general principles on major issues, including the extent of power, revenues and territory of the Muslim region. If all goes well, a final peace deal could be reached by 2016, when Aquino's six-year term ends, officials said.

"This framework agreement paves the way for final and enduring peace in Mindanao," Aquino said, referring to the southern Philippine region and homeland of the country's Muslims. "This means that the hands that once held rifles will be put to use tilling land, selling produce, manning work stations and opening doorways of opportunity."

He cautioned, however, that "the work does not end here," and that the two sides still need to work out the accord's details. Those talks are expected to be tough but doable, officials and rebels said.

Rebel vice chairman Ghadzali Jaafar said the agreement provides a huge relief to people who have long suffered from war and are "now hoping the day would come when there will be no need to bear arms."

The deal marks the most significant progress in 15 years of on-and-off negotiations with the 11,000-strong Moro group on ending an uprising that has left more than 120,000 people dead, displaced about 2 million others and held back development in the south. Western governments have long worried that rebel strongholds could become breeding grounds for al-Qaida-affiliated extremists.

"The parties agree that the status quo is unacceptable," the 13-page agreement says. It calls for the creation of a new Muslim autonomous region called "Bangsamoro" to replace an existing one created in 1989 which Aquino characterized as a "failed experiment," where poverty and corruption have forced many "to articulate their grievances through the barrel of a gun."

The accord also calls for the establishment of a 15-member "Transition Commission" to work out the details of the preliminary agreement and draft a law creating the new Muslim autonomous region in about two years.

Rebel forces would be deactivated gradually "beyond use," the agreement says, without specifying a timetable.

The Philippine government would continue to exercise exclusive powers over defense and security, foreign and monetary policy in the new autonomous region, where Muslims would be assured of an "equitable share of taxation, revenues, and the fruits of national patrimony ... and equal protection of laws and access to impartial justice," according to Aquino.

Philippine officials said the preliminary accord would be posted on the government's website for public scrutiny, and would be signed in Manila in the presence of Aquino, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak and Moro rebel chief Al Haj Murad Ibrahim.

Why it's finally time to ditch Windows XP

When Microsoft introduced Windows Vista in 2007, many people refused to make the switch from Windows XP, an operating system they liked a lot.

Windows XP still has a legion of devoted users who've stuck with the old system, despite all the bells and whistles and improved security of Windows 7. Some of those users would probably prefer to avoid Windows 8 as well.?

However, Microsoft rained on the XP users' parade when the company announced it would be ending its support for the aging OS by April 2014.

That means there will be no more upgrades for XP, and no more security patches.

Withdrawing the troops
That's very bad news for anyone who uses XP, according to Fortinet Research's Stefanie Hoffman.

"Legacy XP systems will become increasingly vulnerable to zero-day attacks and other security threats," Hoffman wrote in a recent blog posting. "The sudden absence of support for XP leaves a void that will likely be filled by a slew of old and/or soon-to-be-discovered vulnerabilities and subsequently give rise to a new crop of security exploits that specifically target these legacy systems, which are now devoid of security updates or support."

Fortinet investigated just how dangerous older and/or outdated operating systems can be to computers. The threat team checked its database for malware snapshots on the same date every year over the past 13 years ? during which Windows 2000, XP, Vista and 7 were released ? and found that older operating systems typically have more exploit activity.

That's partly because malicious code and exploit kits for older systems have more time to circulate and mature. It's also because the security on newer operating systems is simply better.

As Hoffman pointed out, "It's also harder today to get a working rootkit for Windows 7 than Windows XP thanks to Microsoft technology such as PatchGuard, which protects the kernel of an operating system from being unduly modified."

Here come the barbarians
So what can XP users expect if they decide to avoid an upgrade to Windows 7 or 8, or wait until April 2014 to make the switch?

"Full-disclosure security research typically follows a certain pattern: a vulnerability is discovered by a security researcher, a bulletin is released to numerous security mailing lists outlining the vulnerability, and there is a frantic scramble for manufacturers to repair the problem," explained Dylan Evans, vice president of operations at Reveal Digital Forensics and Security in Boise, Idaho. ?

"These same mailing lists are also monitored by hackers, meaning that once a new vulnerability is discovered, there will be a rise in attempted attacks until the problem is patched entirely," Evans said.

You shouldn't be lulled into thinking that just because a new strain of malware is released, targeting a newer operating system, that your old machine will be off the hook.

"New operating system versions still reuse much of the same code, especially when considering the kernel," Evans said. "This means that newly discovered vulnerabilities have the potential to affect old operating systems long past the date that support ends for them.

"If the manufacturer doesn't repair the security hole, it is generally up to third-party security researchers to discover a patch. The average user will neither be aware of the vulnerability nor the patch due to the lack of automatic support, and this puts them at risk."

Even Mac owners need to upgrade
Windows machines get the bulk of the attention of vulnerabilities in operating systems, but Mac owners also need to remember that updates to the latest operating-system versions are equally important to their security.?

"On the Mac OS front, the newest versions, Lion and, more recently, Mountain Lion, have made moves that showed that Apple was more serious about security," said Ryan Permeh, chief technology officer at Newport Beach, Calif., security firm Cylance.

"With the Lion release, Apple started to use an app store model similar to their iDevices. This allows a control point for getting updates, and offering a degree of quality control on the software that is offered," Permeh said.

"Additionally, in Mountain Lion, they implemented a new system called Gatekeeper as a default protection mechanism. Gatekeeper ensures that applications that run must be signed by an appropriate signing vendor. This ensures that rogue applications do not run."

In the end, said Evans, the same very important rule of thumb applies to any piece of software, whether it's an operating system or an anti-virus program: stay current.

"When you can't stay current anymore, like when a manufacturer drops support for an old OS," Evans said, "you absolutely need to upgrade if you plan on keeping your personal information safe."

"I was angry at myself for the fumble and I just used it," Bradshaw said. "I was disappointed with the fumble, but you put it out of your mind. I knew I was cool. We knew the running game was there, we were confident."

The passing game was there, too. Victor Cruz made a career-best three touchdown catches. Eli Manning hit Cruz for scores of 3, 7 and 28 yards, prompting Cruz's trademark salsa in the end zone after each touchdown.

"We showed how resilient we are," said Cruz, who entered the game leading the NFL with 32 receptions and added five for 50 yards. "We started off rough, getting behind the 8-ball a bit, but we were able to keep our wits about us. We understand we'll be able to make some plays offensively."

Bradshaw added a 4-yard run as he darted inside and outside and frequently broke feeble tackle attempts. Bradshaw's yardage on 30 carries easily beat the 132 he had heading into the game.

The Giants are 9-0 in games he has rushed for 100 yards or more.

New York (3-2) also forced three turnovers, including Chase Blackburn's interception in the end zone midway in the fourth quarter to clinch it. That led to rookie David Wilson's first NFL touchdown, a 40-yard scamper, which Wilson celebrated with a flip in the end zone.

The Giants rushed for 243 yards.

"It was across the board," Bradshaw said of the rushing effort. "Inside, outside, left or right, the line was doing everything right."

The Browns weren't. They are 0-5 for the first time since their return season to the NFL in 1999 and have lost 11 straight dating back to last season, matching the franchise record. Their inexperience as the league's youngest team could not be offset by the skills of third overall draft pick Trent Richardson, who ran for a touchdown for the fourth straight game.

And their defense couldn't do anything with Cruz and Bradshaw.

Brandon Weeden, Cleveland's other first-round pick, hit another rookie, Josh Gordon, on two touchdown passes, but the Browns showed why they are winless with several critical errors in the pivotal second period, leading to 20 points for the Giants that pretty much decided matters.

"We've been starving for turnovers," said Giants coach Tom Coughlin, who tied Bill Parcells for regular-season coaching victories with the franchise, 77.

Weeden was sharp for much of the first half, but made a terrible decision on third-and-1 from the Giants 25. With Richardson not on the field, Weeden rolled out and forced a pass to Gordon that sailed high, directly to Stevie Brown. The backup safety sped down the left sideline for 46 yards.

"I was trying to make a play. It was stupid," Weeden said. "I should have airmailed it and let Phil (Dawson) kick a field goal. That was the one throw I want back."

On the next play, Manning found Rueben Randle - yet another rookie - wide open on the left side for 36 more yards. Then Bradshaw highlighted his big opening half with his TD run to tie it at 17.

Veteran Joshua Cribbs made the next mistake for Cleveland, fumbling the ensuing kickoff. Brown was on the spot again for the recovery, and Cruz caught his second touchdown pass for New York's first lead.

"We started out fast and got an early lead," coach Pat Shurmur said. "We had a three-minute stretch before the end of the first half that was, `Wow, you can't do that against a good football team.' `'

Earlier, Cruz caught a 3-yard TD pass. Cruz, Randle and Dominek Hixon stepped up nicely with Hakeem Nicks and Ramses Barden sidelined Sunday.

The Browns weren't finished handing away points. A pair of penalties led to a punt, and a 24-yard pass interference against Buster Skrine gave Lawrence Tynes a chance to kick a 40-yard field goal as the half ended.

Cleveland wound up with 10 penalties for 91 yards.

Before their collapse, the Browns looked sharp as the Giants made the gaffes that led to points.

Bradshaw fumbled when the ball hit guard Chris Snee's shoulder gave the Browns a quick break at the New York 22 and Richardson took care of the yardage with runs of 7 and 15.

Wideout Gordon then beat double coverage, although with no cornerback in sight, for a 62-yard score and a 14-0 edge that didn't last long.

Far North District Council - New Blood Needed To Get Sports Hub ...

Dynamic leaders are needed to govern a board which aims to develop Kaikohe?s Lindvart Park into a vibrant sports hub.

A working group made up of the Far North District Council, Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board, Sport Northland and sports clubs has been developing a shared vision for the park since 2009.

The group decided last year to form a Kaikohe and District Sportsville Incorporated Society to develop the park using a Sportsville model that has been successful across New Zealand.

Objectives of the society, which is yet to be constituted, include improving sports facilities at the park and encouraging more Kaikohe people to take part in sport and recreation activities.

?This is about creating a range of sporting and recreational opportunities for all age groups and ability levels and identifying and supporting the elite sports people of tomorrow,? says Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board chairman Win Stephens.

Mr Stephens says the society will operate on behalf of member clubs who will elect a governance board to achieve common goals on their behalf.

?The board will develop its own strategic plan that will outline what initiatives it would like to progress to achieve its objectives of increasing participation in sport and recreation in Kaikohe.?

He says sports clubs across New Zealand struggle to retain members, attract funding and cope with administration workloads.

?Kaikohe sports clubs are no different. The rugby club has struggled to rebuild its burned-down club rooms and Bay of Islands Hockey has failed to secure a funding shortfall to install lights at the AstroTurf hockey pitch.

?Because of this, there?s been a growing interest in collaboration between clubs.?

At the same time, funding agencies have indicated they want to maximise returns on their investments by supporting clubs that work together and share facilities and resources.

?The larger funders, such as ASB Community Trust, have indicated that they want to support applications from organisations that represent many clubs rather than single code sports clubs.?

The working group is looking for suitably-qualified people to fill four vacancies on the inaugural board.

?The term of appointment will generally be for three years, although there are transitional rotation provisions in the first three years.?

Applicants should have skills, experience and networks in one or more of the following areas: governance, leadership, strategic planning, financial management, law, fundraising, and facility management.

Interested people are invited to apply by sending a CV and covering letter to Sue Hodge, Far North District Council, Private Bag 752, Kaikohe 0440 before 5pm on October 19.

Suitable applicants will be interviewed within three weeks of the closing date.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Supreme Court plunged into its new term Monday with a high-stakes dispute between businesses and human rights groups over accountability for foreign atrocities. The next nine months hold the prospect for major rulings on affirmative action, gay marriage and voting rights.

The term that concluded in June set a high bar for drama and significance, and the new one holds considerable potential as well. Cases involving some of the most emotional issues in American life are likely to be decided after voters choose a president and new Congress next month.

Meeting on the first Monday in October, as required by law, the justices entered the crowded marble courtroom for the first time since their momentous decision in late June that upheld President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

The decisive vote in favor of Obamacare, Chief Justice John Roberts was smiling as he led the justices into the courtroom just after 10 a.m. The conservative chief justice will be watched closely in the coming months for any new indications of a willingness to side with the court's liberals, as he did in the health care case.

The lineup of justices was the same as in June, but the bench had a slightly different look nonetheless. Justice Antonin Scalia was without the glasses he no longer needs following cataract surgery over the summer.

The exterior of the building also looked different. The familiar columns are sheathed in scaffolding, which itself is covered in fabric made to look like the iconic front of the court.

Roberts formally opened the term, and the court turned quickly to its first argument, which could have far-reaching implications.

The dispute involves a lawsuit against Royal Dutch Petroleum, or Shell Oil, over claims that the company was complicit in murder and other abuses committed by the Nigerian government against its citizens in the oil-rich Niger Delta.

Human rights groups are warily watching the case because it would be a major setback if the court were to rule that foreign victims could not use American courts, under a 1789 law, to seek accountability and money damages for what they have been through.

The justices appeared ready to impose some limits, but it was unclear how far the court would go to shield businesses and perhaps individuals as well, from human rights lawsuits under the 223-year-old Alien Tort Statute.

Justice Samuel Alito said the Nigerian case has no connection to this country because the businesses, the victims and the location of the abuse all are foreign. "Why does this case belong in the courts of the United States?" Alito asked.

Among other concerns raised by the justices was the prospect that U.S. firms could "be sued in any country in any court in the world," in Justice Anthony Kennedy's words.

The Obama administration is partly on the oil company's side in this case. "There just isn't any meaningful connection to the United States," Solicitor General Donald Verrilli Jr. said.

But Verrilli also said the court should not issue a broad ruling that would foreclose all similar lawsuits even when the corporation being sued is American. The administration is not endorsing such lawsuits, but argues that the broader question should wait for an appropriate case. U.S. allies also oppose a broad interpretation of the law.

The Alien Tort Statute went unused for most of American history until rights lawyers dusted it off beginning in the late 1970s. Lawsuits have been brought against individuals who allegedly took part in abuses and, more recently, against companies that do business in places where abuses occur as well as in the United States.

Paul Hoffman, a Venice, Calif.-based lawyer who represents the Nigerian victim, drew a parallel to Nazi Germany and the role played by chemical giant I.G. Farben in supplying Nazi death camps with poison gas.

"Is it the case that a modern-day I.G. Farben would be exempt from the Alien Tort Statute?" Hoffman said.

Business interests argue they are being subjected to claims over the bad behavior of foreign regimes, which are shielded from lawsuits here under U.S. law.

The court first heard the case in February to consider whether businesses could be sued under the law. But the justices asked for additional arguments about whether the law could be applied to any conduct that takes place abroad.

A decision is expected by spring.

The first blockbuster case on the court's calendar is Oct. 10, when the justices will hear arguments in a fight over the University of Texas' affirmative action program. Texas uses multiple factors, including community service, work experience, extracurricular activities, awards and race, to help fill 20 to 25 percent of the spots in its freshman classes. The outcome could further limit or even end the use of racial preferences in college admissions.

The court also is expected to confront gay marriage in some form. Several cases seek to guarantee federal benefits for legally married same-sex couples. A provision of the 1996 Defense of Marriage Act deprives same-sex couples of a range of federal benefits available to heterosexual couples.

Several federal courts have agreed that the provision of the law is unconstitutional, a situation that practically ensures the high court will step in.

A separate appeal asks the justices to sustain California's Proposition 8, the amendment to the state Constitution that outlawed gay marriage in the nation's largest state. Federal courts in California have struck down the amendment.

The justices may not consider whether to hear the gay marriage issue until November.

Another hot topic with appeals pending before the high court, and more soon to follow, is the future of a cornerstone law of the civil rights movement.

In 2006, Congress overwhelmingly approved, and President George W. Bush signed, legislation extending for 25 more years a critical piece of the Voting Rights Act. It requires states and local governments with a history of racial and ethnic discrimination, mainly in the South, to get advance approval either from the Justice Department or the federal court in Washington before making any changes that affect elections.

The court spoke skeptically about the provision in a 2009 decision, but left it mostly unchanged. Now, however, cases from Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Texas could prompt the court to deal head-on with the issue of advance approval. The South Carolina and Texas cases involve voter identification laws; a similar Indiana law was previously upheld by the court.

It is unclear when the justices will decide whether to hear arguments in those cases. Arguments themselves would not take place until next year.

The court itself has largely been absent as an issue on the presidential campaign trail. But the justices could become enmeshed in election disputes, even before the ballots are counted. Lawsuits in Ohio over early voting and provisional ballots appear the most likely to find their way to the justices before the Nov. 6 election, said Richard Hasen, an election law expert at the University of California at Irvine law school.
